Zagarolo in the World.
Thanks to an agreement with the Province of Rome and the City of Zagarolo, Touro College, an institution of higher education based in New York, has started preparations to open a new branch at the prestigious Rospigliosi Palace.
From when it was founded in the United States thirty-six years ago, one of Touro’s main characteristics has been the help and services offered to all its students and its opening to all members of society, a demonstration of its commitment to the right to study.
As an integral part of its project and a prelude to the opening of its new branch, Touro College Rome, in collaboration with the City of Zagarolo, will be organizing, starting in Fall 2008, independent, not-for-credit English courses for the population of Zagarolo and the surrounding area. This is the first of many steps in opening a window to the world in Zagarolo
The courses, part of a pilot project of semi-intensive courses which will also be offered to secondary schools in the area, will last for a total of 40 hours for about three months. The lessons will be divided into different levels and students will be assigned to a course in keeping with their own level thanks to a written and oral test.
Courses will be available for beginning, intermediate and post-intermediate levels, according to the request and teacher availability.
Teachers and methodology
All teachers are mother-tongue, qualified ESL teachers, of high professional caliber and with considerable accrued experience.
The lessons will be given in an atmosphere where learning is a pleasure and the results last with time. The aim is to develop the four linguistic skills (speaking, understanding, reading and writing). Particular emphasis will be placed on encouraging confidence and student fluency.
The aim is also to help students understand how the language works by using real situations and tasks, and created the opportunity to make active use of group work.
Textbooks and other material
All teaching material (books, audio-visuals, etc.) will be in English and will be chosen according to need and level. Supplementary material will also be used to enrich the learning experience. Students will have the chance to peek into the English-speaking world right from the start.
Another essential component will be the ongoing monitoring of students’ progress.
Cost and information
In order to make English accessible to the population of Zagarolo, and as a prelude to the opening of Touro College, the courses, partly thanks to a contribution from the City of Zagarolo, students will be asked for only a minimal payment, excluding the cost of textbooks.
