In the Spring '98 semester, the
students of the Touro College Flatbush
Men's Division started their own student
chapter of the ACM (Association for
Computing Machinery). Peter Clifford, a
representative of the ACM, was present at
the Spring '98 Computer Society meeting to
kick off this important event. Membership
in a student chapter of the ACM yields
insights into computing as a science and a
profession. Various publications such as
this newsletter and meetings can help keep
you informed of state of the art
developments, and allow you to meet and
observe accomplished professionals from
all areas of the industry. Participation
in a professional organization beyond the
required course work is also prima-facie
evidence of serious interest and
dedication to advancing in the computer
industry. Additionally, it is certainly an
asset on a resume. In the fall semester we
enjoyed a very informative talk given by
Gedalyah Weinberger - President of
American Healthware systems, Chairman of
the Agudah's Daf Yomi Commission, and
former Deputy Chair of the Brooklyn
College Computer Science Department. We
hope to hear from more speakers in the
future. The chapter has already set up
phase one of a web page and we are looking
for volunteers to help assist in phase
two. A link to the web site can be found
on the home page of the Computer Science
Department
(http://www.touro.edu/Academic/ASP/AcademicHome.asp).
Future plans for our web page include a form to enter personal information and maintaining an alumni database to help students network for job placement. Joining the student chapter of the ACM is free. All you have to do is fill out the form. However, the more you participate in chapter events the more of an edge you will have when applying for a job in the computer industry. Our current officers are Ari Grunberger - President, Mordechai Shtern - Vice President, and Eliezer Weisz - Secretary. We are looking for at least one new officer for the next year as well as contributors to our semesterly newsletter and web page. Please approach me or one of the officers if you would like to volunteer or if you have any ideas for future chapter speakers or events.
