EDIT626: Teaching Computer Applications in the Classroom
This course introduces students to computer tools and how to integrate them into lessons across the curriculum. Students develop lesson plans that incorporate each of the tools as well as the ISTE standards. Students learn various techniques to teach the computer tools and applications to all grade levels..

EDIT641: Programming in the Classroom Java)
This course is an introduction to programming using the Java programming language. Students learn to design and implement Java programs, develop and select appropriate algorithms and data structures to solve problems, code fluently in an object­-oriented paradigm, and understand large programs consisting of several classes with interacting objects. Successful completion of this course ensures competency in teaching the new AP Java course available to high school students.

EDIT642: Multimedia Educational Applications in Software Development
Students develop computer-based educational software using hypermedia, and authoring language or programming language. Some background in instructional design is recommended.

EDIT643: Children, Technology and Media Literacy
This course examines the effects of mass media on children, with a focus on social science theory and research concerning such effects. The ability to analyze and evaluate images and electronic forms of communication are enhanced. Major areas of consideration include the effects of media violence, pro-social programming and its impact, cognitive processing of media content, the effects of advertising, the emotional effects of the media, and intervention strategies.

EDIT646: Distance Learning Applications This course explores various technologies that are used to provide the platform for distance learning. Students produce and evaluate materials for the delivery of distance instruction and learn instructional design concepts that apply to distance learning.

EDIT652: Assistive and Special Needs Technology
This course is designed for technology leaders specializing in assistive and special needs technology. Its purpose is to help students explore and familiarize themselves with the hardware and software available to students with disabilities; provide theoretical and practical knowledge of how to conduct assistive technology evaluations; and familiarize students with a variety of funding sources for assistive technology for students with disabilities.

EDIT 610 Computer Literacy for Novice Users

This course is designed for those educators who have never used computers, and covers the fundamentals using the mouse and keyboard, the Windows user interface, and the World Wide Web. A brief discussion of basic computer terminology including, the input, output, processing cycle and storage, software, communications, the Internet, and practical uses of technology in education is also covered. Computer components are explored and the Windows operating system is introduced. Topics include: creating folders; organizing files into folders; copying, moving, deleting, and renaming files; searching for files base on their name, contents, type, or date they were created; and basic troubleshooting.

 

EDIT 618 Computer Literacy: Digital Photography for Educators

This course provides an introduction to digital photography for use in the K-8 Classroom. Digital cameras and image editing software will be introduced with an eye toward using theses resources to enhance learning and increase the visual appeal of classroom instructional materials. Hands-on demonstrations and activities will allow participants to gain mastery in basic shooting, photo editing, and retouching. The goal of the course is to integrate digital photography into current classroom practice, providing direct linkages to ISTE standards.

EDIT 619 Integration Literacy: Animation in the Middle School Classroom

This beginner’s course teaches the fundamental principles and techniques of animation on the computer. Using a variety of software tools and techniques including Photoshop and Flash, teachers learn how to create basic animation for web sites and presentations. Educators learn how to integrate animation in student projects and understand the educational impact these visuals have on student learning. Directly linked to ISTE standards, this course offers the opportunity to fully explore technology communications tools and how they aid in increasing the absorption of new material, enhancing retention.

EDIT 620 Information Literacy: Using the Internet as a Research Tool

This course exposes educators to the vast resources available on the Internet, and focuses on how to effectively use the components of this vast resource. Educators will become familiar with Internet terminology, basic web browsing skills, and creating E-mail accounts. This course also focuses on using the Internet effectively as a powerful research tool. Educators learn how to construct basic and complex queries, find specialized information, understand the invisible web, search subscription database like Proquest and find making lists and newsgroups.

Prerequisite: EDIT 610 or 625

 

EDIT 625 Computer Literacy Word Processing Applications for Educators

This course is designed for teachers who have basic Windows and World Wide Web skills. Educators learn the necessary word processing (MicroSoft Word) skills to produce class handouts, letters, memos, tests and proposals. Educators will also learn how to use word-processing to increase productivity and aid in administrative tasks. In addition, advanced document production skills necessary to produce items such as classroom newsletters will be covered. Discussion of the uses of Word Processing in the classroom to foster learning with direct linkage to ISTE standards will be explored.

Prerequisite: EDIT 610

 

EDIT 634 Integration Literacy: Flash for Educators

Introduction to web animation using Flash. Topics covered include, creating graphics, animation, sound, interactivity, and publishing Flash movies and increase retention by uploading the Flash movie to the Web for viewing outside the classroom. Learn how to enhance class lectures with Flash movies. Discover the secrets behind successful animation and how to excite students through interactive lessons using Flash and the Web.

Prerequisite: EDIT 610 or EDIT 615

 

EDIT 635 Computer Literacy: Electronic Spreadsheet for Educators

This course is for teachers with basic word processing skills. The lab part of the course will be focused on the necessary electronic Spreadsheet skills (MS Excel) to produce student grade books and classroom budgets. Teachers will learn how to use spreadsheets as a teacher productivity tool. The second part of the course will be focus on the discussion and implementation of advanced uses of Microsoft Excel skills to produce graphics, reports, tables and Spreadsheet analysis for the classroom. Teachers will also learn how to integrate Spreadsheets in the classroom.

Prerequisite: EDIT 625

 

EDIT 636 Integration Literacy: Curriculum Creations in KidPix

If you’re looking for a way to inspire student creativity and create multimedia projects throughout the curriculum, then Kid Pix is for you! Designed to create learning, the program can be used in a teacher-initiated lesson or as part of a child-centered activity. During this hands-on workshop, participants will explore the program and find ways that it can be used to enhance their curriculum and meet the ISTE standards. Best practices of using Kid Pix can be used in a variety of classroom settings will also be explored, including utilizing the Spanish mode to support the ESL learner.

Recommended For: Teachers K-5, Special Ed, School Media Specialists, Reading Teachers

Prerequisite: EDIT 600 or EDIT 605


EDIT 638 Integration Literacy: Publisher for Educators

This course provides an introduction to Publisher and teaches educators to create printed materials for inclusion in classroom activities. These activities may include assigning the task of creating a newsletter or other printed materials that demonstrate knowledge of the subject matter, and will benefit both contemporary and historical subject matters. Printed materials of this nature are a wonderful supplement to traditional textbooks and are thoroughly engaging. This course will benefit any History, English or Social Science class.

 

EDIT 639 Computer Literacy: Adobe Photoshop for Educators

This course introduces students to working with graphics and pictures in a digital environment through the use of Adobe Photoshop. Educators learn how to use photo imagery to enhance lessons and presentations for use to support their particular curriculum area within New York State and ISTE standards. Digital imagery, color correction, scanning and manipulating images will be explored. Students will work on various projects that assimilate “real world” design for advertising and publicity. Preparing images for the Web and basic Web image principles will be introduced. Lab time will be necessary for class assignments.

Prerequisite: EDIT 605 or EDIT 615

 

EDIT 640 Computer Literacy: Database Management Software for Educators

Designed for educators with basic word processing and spreadsheet skills. The lab part of the course uses Microsoft Access and focuses on the skills needed to produce a database to keep track of student grades and attendance, books, and other types of recordable information useful to educators, and decrease the percentage of time spent on these administrative duties. Educators learn how to use databases as a productivity tool.

 

EDIT 645 Integration Literacy: Integrating Spreadsheet in the curriculum

Educators learn how to create lesson plans and activities using spreadsheets and explore the many ways this can be integrated into the daily administrative duties of an educator. How to use spreadsheet to support their particular curriculum area within the New York State standards will be explored and discussed in depth.

Prerequisite: EDIT 635

 

EDIT 648 Integration Literacy: Creating WebQuest Learning Environments

Creating WebQuest learning environment including using existing resources, adapting or modifying a WebQuest, creating a new WebQuest, or co-producing materials. In addition, students will examine insrtructional and classroom strategies for successfully intergrating these activities in the K-12 classroom.

Prerequisite: EDIT 600 OR EDIT 605

 

EDIT 656 Integration literacy: Using Logo in the Classroom

This course focuses on the Logo interactive programming language developed for K-12 students. It is rooted in constructivist educational philosophy, and is designed to support constructivist learning. A wide variety of topics will be covered in this course including using Logo in mathematics, language, logic, animation and multimedia projects and game design. Participants will also examine ways to make the Logo programming environment accessible to very young children and learn techniques for constructing multimedia projects. Educators will work with a variety of Logo activities that are suitable for use with K-12 students as well as discussing integration techniques and strategies for initiating and implementing Logo activities in the curriculum.

Prerequisite: EDIT 600

 

EDIT 657 Integration Literacy: Foundations of Integration Literacy

This important foundation course is for all educators who want to integrate technology into their classroom. This course covers the fundamental topics and theories one needs to understand to use technology. This introductory course will discuss the following topics: technology standards as they relate to national, state and local standards; strategies for teaching with technology; planning for technology integration; the one-computer classroom, two-computer classroom, and multi-computer classroom; planning lessons with technology; learning theories as related to using technology; finding funds to support classroom technology.

 

EDIT 660 Integration Literacy: Using Inspiration in the Classroom

Inspiration is a tool for recording and organizing thoughts, and show an outline of that is a reflection of the pattern of thought. This workshop will train educators how to effectively use Inspiration software. Inspiration is designed to help students develop their ideas and organize their thinking by allowing them to visually diagram their ideas or concepts. Kidspiration is also explored in this workshop.

 

EDIT 662 Integration Literacy: Digital Architecture in the Curriculum (Grades 5 – 12)

This course provides an introduction to the integration of Architecture into the classroom using the latest digital tools and Internet resources, in conjunction with ISTE standards. Educators can use these techniques to invigorate the study of Pyramids, Cathedrals, Castles, Mosques, and Skyscrapers in social studies, art, and technology curricula. The study of ancient Greece, Rome, China, Japan, India and American Indian all include components of architecture and this course provides a way to engage today’s students. (Grades 5 – 12)


EDIT 663 Integration Literacy: Digital Art History for the Classroom

This course provides an introduction to teaching Art History using Internet resources, CD-ROMS and image editing software. Educators can use these to techniques to invigorate the study of art history form any period in history from the ancient world to the present. This course provides a way to engage today’s students with multimedia and interactivity in their investigations of the history of art. (Grades 5 – 12)

Prerequisite: EDIT 600

 

EDIT 664 Integration Literacy: Digital Music for the Elementary Classroom

This course provides an introduction to using Music Ace and Finale Notepad to teach basic music notation. Teaching students to read and write music can be fun and interactive for the students using the latest in digital tools. Teachers of Music or teachers using music in their classroom (drama, primary grades) will benefit from this course.

Prerequisite: EDIT 600

 

EDIT 668 Integration Literacy: Web Page Design for Educators

This course teaches basic web design skills, which can be used to support the educators particular curriculum area within New York State standards. Using websites to teach course material is an excellent way to carry on with the lesson outside of the classroom. Educators can easily provide lesson materials and supporting materials that are accessible from home and can be used for review purposes, study aids, and as a way of engaging students while working on homework assignments. This course teaches the skills needed for adding text, images, video, and links to a multi-page website.

 

EDIT 676 Integration Literacy: Advanced Photoshop for Educators

This second level course covers advanced topics in Photoshop. Educators learn how to use Photoshop to improve instruction of subjects that are visually dependent, with direct linkage to ISTE standards. Educators learn how create engaging, educational imagery in Photoshop and foster learning and inclusion in the one computer and multi-computer classroom.

Lab requirements: Must bring subject content to this class in order to create Photoshop material.

Prerequisite: EDIT 637

 

EDIT 685 Integration Literacy: Intermediate-Integrating Internet Technology in the Classroom

Designed to generate innovative ideas for curriculum delivery in the classroom and utilize the internet as a teaching tool with direct linkage to ISTE standards. Educators learn the following topics: finding lesson plans; searching for content sites; using Internet activities for students; finding global project; investigating teaching recourse sites; understand Internet safety; finding Webquests; finding collaborative problem solving projects.

Prerequisite: EDSE 623 and EDSE 630


EDIT 675 Integration Literacy: PowerPoint in the Classroom

This course is for educators with basic computer knowledge but little or no direct experience using a computer as a teaching tool. Educators learn how to use PowerPoint to improve instruction and foster inclusion, with direct linkage to New York State and ISTE standards, and integrate these skills in the one computer and multi-computer classroom.

Lab requirements: Must bring subject content to this class in order to create PowerPoint material.

Prerequisite: EDSE 623 and EDSE 630


EDIT 697 Integration Literacy: Advanced PowerPoint in the Classroom

Covers advanced topics in PowerPoint. Educators will learn how to use PowerPoint to improve instruction and foster inclusion with direct linkage to ISTE standards. Educators will learn how create PowerPoint presentations and how to integrate these skills in the one computer and multi-computer classroom and use the skills to support their particular curriculum area within New York State standards.

Lab requirements: Must bring subject content to this class in order to create PowerPoint material.
