Educ 602 Applied Linguistics for Teacher of Literacy.
An examination of the structure of language, language acquisition, and language variations applied to teaching literacy with respect to reading principles, methods and materials. An in depth analysis of the stages of first and second language acquisition and the interdependence between literacy background and language acquisition. Research which focuses on the relationship between language and reading is examined. 3 hours

Basic Reading Instruction
Current approaches to teaching reading in developmental context,creation of language-rich environments, the nature of oral and written communication, assessment of language and reading skills, factors influencing literacy development, approaches to organizing a functional reading program, approaches to working with English language learners and students with special needs. The first half of the course will be devoted to Birth-Grade 6 and the second half to instruction in grades 5-12. 3 hours

SpEd 667 Diagnosis and Remediation of Reading Disabilities
The developmental and cultural contexts for understanding symptoms and causes of reading disabilities: diagnostic instruments and approaches to assessment of reading disabilities: programs, materials, and methods for nurturing literacy and for instruction of students with reading disabilities: one-on -one field work with a child with reading disabilities and presentation of case studies by students. 3 hours. Educ 677 Literacy in the Bilingual/ Multicultural Classroom
Research and theories of first and second language acquisition as related to methods of teaching, listening, speaking, reading and writing in the bilingual/multicultural classroom. Examination of current pedagogical methodology, assessment procedures and literature related to the specialized needs of the bilingual student and the multicultural classroom. Coursework will focus on birth through grade six in the first half of the semester and grades five through twelve in the second half. 3 hours
Educ 605 Literacy Instruction-Birth through Grade Six
A thorough study of the principles, practices, methodologies, and assessment tools utilized in the teaching of early literacy skills and strategies. Differentiating instruction for the at risk student,special needs student and English language learner will be explored. Emergent literacy is emphasized with the focus on creating a balanced literacy program.Children's literature is examined within the context of literacy instruction at the level of birth- grade 6. 3 hours
Educ 609 Literacy Instruction Grade five through twelve
Provides students with the skills and knowledge necessary to support the developmental reading and literacy skills of middle and secondary students. Methods of teaching reading across the curriculum, literature for individual, group and whole-class reading in junior and senior high schools will be explored. Students will learn effective instructional practices for teaching reading for information, report writing, and using writing to foster literary understanding. Providing for individual differences in literacy instruction in the junior and senior high schools will be considered. 3 hours
