Dear Prospective Students and Alumni,
We are pleased to send you information about our School Psychology Graduate Program. We offer an MS degree which leads to New York State certification as a School Psychologist.
Our mission is to train School Psychologists who are skilled in evaluating, diagnosing and implementing successful solutions to improve children’s academic, social, emotional and physical well-being. Our courses are taught by experts and practitioners who join scholarship with effective everyday practical techniques. Students graduating our program will be well prepared to meet the contemporary challenges facing children, parents and educators in today’s stressful and rapidly changing world.
The graduate school of Education and Psychology is located in Midtown Manhattan. Whereas we encourage full-time attendance (3 year plan of study), we welcome part-time (4 year plan of study) students. We offer late afternoon, evening, Sunday and a few online courses to accommodate the schedules of students who are presently employed.
We are a unique program with traditional and innovative ideas rooted in many years of experience. You will find additional information about our program in the enclosed materials. Please feel free to contact us with any questions you may have.
Sincerely,
Dr. Reuben Castagno

Description of the Program
|
| |
The mission of Touro College is to train competent school psychologists, skilled in assessing and diagnosing problems and planning and implementing successful solutions to significantly improve children’s academic, social, emotional and physical well – being.
As specialists in learning and the emotional development of children, School Psychologists provide a wide variety of important services for students, educational staff and families. Major services provided include: (1) individual diagnostic assessment of children, (2) evaluating the assessment results and meeting with teachers, administrators and parents to plan successful academic and behavioral intervention strategies, (3) counseling and consultation skills, (4) staff and parent in – service training (e.g. violence prevention and crisis intervention workshops) and, at times classroom teaching (e.g. conflict resolution skills). Recent developments in the field of school psychology includes the expansion of services to very young children and their families and an increased sensitivity and awareness to the multicultural contexts and influences that effect children’s learning and behavior.
The Master of Science degree program in School Psychology consists of 63 semester hours of required courses. We have developed a well balanced curriculum that covers the areas of education and special education, assessment, diagnosis, counseling and consultation skills.
Upon completion of the program, students will receive an MS degree and will have met all the requirements to apply for their NY State School Psychology certification, which will allow them to practice as school psychologists.
The School Psychology Program requirements can be completed within three years of full time study or four years of part time study. For full time students, completion of the coursework during the first two years is followed by a 1200-hour internship. Part time students have up to four years to complete their coursework and the internship. Students who work full-time must seriously take the internship requirement into account when applying to the program.
Each student will be assigned an advisor to assist in developing the student's program of study.
Students who have taken graduate courses at other accredited institutions may transfer up to 12 semester hours with the signed permission of their major professor and the Dean.
Our faculty consists of well experienced educators and practicing school psychologists who join scholarship with effective everyday practical techniques. Our faculty prepare our students to be psychologists with special expertise in applying their knowledge and skills within educational settings.
