The Graduate Schools of Psychology and Education of Touro College are proud to announce the inauguration of academic courses and certificate and degree bearing programs that will feature the theory and practice of the lifetime work of Dr. Reuven Feuerstein. The Summer Institute at Touro College will be the first of its graduate programs to offer introductory level courses for graduate students, teachers, administrators and therapists who are interested in gaining a basic working knowledge of the Feuerstein system of assessment and intervention. These courses include:

  • Introduction to Mediated Learning Theory: 3 credits. PSY 691. August 10-14

This course is designed to introduce students to the basic concepts of Mediated Learning Experience (MLE). This course will provide the basic theoretical and applied underpinnings of a comprehensive methodology of assessment and intervention developed by Reuven Feuerstein. As a consequence of its distinct learning implications, MLE will throughout this course be compared to traditional/direct learning and educational theories and methods in order to highlight similarities and critical distinctions. The relationships between traditional/direct learning, mediated learning and by extension cognitive modifiability will be explored. An overview of developmental, cognitive and educational applications of instruments employed in the process of assessment and mediation will be examined within the context of theory, applied research and clinical practice. This course is designed as the prerequisite for all subsequent courses of MLE based assessment (Learning Potential Assessment Device) and intervention (Instrumental Enrichment).
  • Instrumental Enrichment I: 3 credits. PSY 692. Session I: August 17-21, Session II: August 24-28

This course is designed to introduce students to the theory and methodology of Instrumental Enrichment and to familiarize course participants with theoretical and applied concepts and methods of cognitive modifiability. This course will focus on the application of Instrumental Enrichment for children and adults with normative developmental abilities as well as for populations presenting with special cognitive/behavioral needs. Prerequisite for this course is Introduction to Mediated Learning Experience. To establish a theoretical prospective for the spectrum of cognitive educational programs, students will be provided with a broad introduction to methods and techniques that employ both curriculum based and stand - alone cognitive intervention strategies. Theoretical and applied characteristics that distinguish Instrumental Enrichment from other cognitive intervention strategies will be reviewed. During this course students will learn to administer the first seven of the fourteen IE instruments. Students will learn to integrate IE training strategies into school based curriculum both for normative and special needs students.
  • Learning Potential Assessment Device - Level I: 3 credits. PSY 693. Session I: August 17-21, Session II: August 24-28

This course is designed to introduce students to the theory and application of the LPAD. Introduction to Mediated Learning Experience is a prerequisite for admission to this course. Theoretical and methodological differences as well as similarities between the LPAD and traditional psychometric systems will be examined. Students will be introduced to the range of LPAD tasks and review cognitive abilities, including l sensory-motor functions, perception, attention, memory, reasoning and problem solving functions. Selected sub tests included in the LPAD will be reviewed and conceptually linked to cognitive functions. Procedures, applications, data interpretation as well as report preparation will be briefly reviewed.

These courses are scheduled for the second, third and fourth week of August 2009 and are designed to provide the student with an intensive immersion learning experience. Courses will run Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM through 6:00 PM. Starting August 10th and running through August 14th Introduction to Mediated Learning Experience will be offered. This course is designed as a prerequisite for the all courses provided in this sequence. Starting on Monday August 17th through August 21 and repeating during the week of August 24th through August 28th both Instrumental Enrichment I and Learning Potential Assessment Device I will be offered so that students will have the opportunity of achieving up to nine graduates during the Summer Institute. These courses can be combined with the certificate program offered by The Feuerstein Institute of Jerusalem or integrated into Masters’ Degree programs of Touro College. Graduate courses and programs are among the most competitively priced within the metropolitan New York City Area. Individuals interested in registering for these courses please call (212) 463-0400 x5376 or e-mail TheSummerInstitute@touro.edu for information.
