Academic Computing Personnel Present at Educomm/Infocomm 2007

Albert Bina, Technical Support Manager for Touro's computer labs, and Phil Charach, Director of Instructional Technology, both of Touro's Academic Computing Department, presented an innovative session entitled "Do-It-Yourself Projector Control" on June 19, 2007, at Educomm/Infocomm 2007.
Mr. Bina developed an easily-extensible software program to control ceiling-mounted projectors via serial port communication . This program fulfilled the capstone project requirement for his Master’s degree in Instructional Technology and is currently utilized in Touro's smart classrooms at various sites.
In the session at Educomm, Mr. Bina and Mr. Charach emphasized that every smart classroom needs a projector to provide audio-visual capabilities. Fixed ceiling-mounted projectors, however, bring about a host of issues caused by inaccessible on-board controls and unreliable infrared remote controls. Popular solutions, such as switchers, control boxes, or vendor-supplied touch-screens, are high-cost or provide limited utility or extensibility. Mr. Bina and Mr. Charach demonstrated how Touro College solved the projector control problem by utilizing the software program developed in-house by Mr. Bina.
Educomm 2007, which ran concurrently with Infocomm from June 19-21, 2007, is a premiere educational technology conference with a strong focus on audiovisual equipment.
