TOUROCOM
Student Health

The health and safety of our students are primary concerns. This brief discussion will help students understand the process regarding their specific health issues.

  1. Most students will have no source of income other than loans and grants while attending Medical College. Many will qualify for Medicaid which will cover most physical and mental health care. TOUROCOM is working with one of the main Medicaid providers in Harlem (Affinity Health Plan) and they will work, in confidence, with students who qualify so that they can be enrolled in the program and can get confidential care at any affiliated center.
  2. For students who apply for Medicaid and do not qualify, TOUROCOM has a program that will provide funds for office visits to the listed providers noted on page 29 of the Student Handbook and page 40 of the Catalog, but will not cover additional fees for laboratory work, x-rays, prescriptions, etc.
  3. To make an appointment to see one of the contracted group physicians, refer to the list of our providers, which can be found on page 29 of the Student Handbook and page 40 of the Catalog, for both physical and mental health care. The process will guarantee confidentiality.
  4. You are required to provide your own health insurance to cover those circumstances where you may become more seriously ill. Proof of such coverage is a requirement to matriculate. At the time of registration, if you do not have such a policy, you will be required to purchase a policy provided by an independent agency unless you can provide evidence of Medicaid coverage.
  5. If you become injured or ill while in class or at TOUROCOM and need assistance in obtaining care, notify your instructor or staff person that you are ill and need assistance. If no one is available, notify the Office of Student Affairs. Alternatively, you may go to the Student Affairs Office and notify the Dean of Student Affairs or his designee of your situation. As a last resort, notify the Deans Office. If the illness requires emergency care, e.g., laceration while in the anatomy lab, immediate first aid may be provided by the faculty member in charge and you may be instructed to visit the closest health care facilities for additional care in confidence.

The Administration will make every effort to assist you in being transported to that health care facility for care. If the injury or illness is deemed more serious or life-threatening, emergency service, i.e. 911, will be notified.
