SNMA, the nation’s oldest and largest independent, student-run organization focused on the needs and concerns of medical students of color, held its 45th annual medical education conference in New Orleans in April.
TouroCOM’s Admissions Director, Obed Figueroa, participated in the Professional Exhibit and a Pre-medical Recruitment fair held at the conference and met hundreds of potential applicants and provided information on TouroCOM.
A reception dedicated to osteopathic medicine was well attended and provided the opportunity to meet pre-med students as well as graduates from several osteopathic medical schools.
TouroCOM participated in the National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions, Inc. conference in Philadelphia this April. The TouroCOM mission statement was conveyed to several hundred Pre-med Advisors by TouroCOM Director of Admissions, Obed Figueroa who was a member of a discussion panel at the well attended session. He also took part in a recruitment fair for pre-med students which was part of the conference.
Osteopathic medicine was also represented at the gathering by The American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOMAS), which conducted a presentation describing their organizations mission as well as an overview of the growth of the profession and various demographical statistic of the application pool.
The NAAHP serves as a resource for the professional development of health professions advisors.
In February, the pre-med students at City College participated in an information session featuring TouroCOM's Director of Admissions, Obed Figueroa. The pre-med advisor and coordinator of this event was Mrs. Belinda Smith. Students in attendance introduced themselves and mentioned the area of medicine they would like to study and asked question about being a D.O. This was followed by a PowerPoint presentation which included a long listing of areas of specialization that an osteopathic physician can explore.
A similar presentation was made to the 'Future Healers of America' of Queens College on March 17th 2009. The organizers of this event were Mrs. Eleanor Feldman and Mr. Ellis Cortez. Each of the students discussed their career interest. Mr. Obed displayed the PowerPoint presentation and discussed the type of student TouroCOM desires to recruit.
Both groups were given pointers on effective interview techniques and provided with advice on building credentials and/or exposure in the medical profession prior to engaging in interviews for medical schools.
The students at both sessions were invited to attend TouroCOM's upcoming Open Houses in order to view the facility and meet the Deans and the current students.
