On this date AACOMAS and the University of Maryland pre-med advisor Wendy Loughlin organized a recruitment fair so that all of the College’s of Osteopathic Medicine had the opportunity to attend and represent their college and State. The event was held on campus at the plants and science building.
Present at the fair was AACOMAS and the following COM’s; TOUROCOM-N.Y, New England, Virginia and Philadelphia, New Jersey. In attendance were 50 pre-med students who were mostly interested in applying to medical school for 2009.
AACOMAS began with showing a PowerPoint presentation which illustrated the history of AACOM and then explained their application process. Afterwards there was some Q&A from the pre-med students we then broke up into exhibit tables.
In speaking with about 30 students I found that the question most frequently asked was, “what type of student is TOUROCOM looking for?” Then to follow was inquiry about the academic requirements and application process. The students also asked about the clinical and outreach opportunities. The students were informed that TOUROCOM frequently will host Information Sessions. Students that were interested provided their names and emails.

The SNMA organization was established in 1964 by medical student from Howard University School of Medicine and Meharry Medical College to provide support and resources to medical students. In addition, the student organization, which is a largely minority based is organized with the typical business organizational structure; president, chairs, house delegates, statewide chapters etc. This organization is student run and they hold regional and national conferences. This year the regional was held at Columbia University and the National conference was held the Marriott Marquis in Times Square. The turnout out the national conference was over 1,500. students. On this date the about 45 SNMA pre-med students visited TOUROCOM for a presentation and a tour of our facility. The students arrived at the buildings main entrance and then were escorted to the lecture hall I.
The students were given an agenda and an informational packet. We briefly discussed our mission and described the type of students TOUROCOM hoping to attract. Dr. Peter’s began with a discussion about Osteopathic Medicine. I then briefly discussed the admissions process and the opportunities that Harlem and New York has to offer. We polled the group and the majority of the students were from out-of-state. Ms. Lydia Thomas introduced herself and described her role at the college. MS I students, Femi Showele and James Jenkins introduced themselves and then discussed why they wanted to attend TOUROCOM and become a doctor in Harlem.
TourWe divided the students into groups and each group had a TOUROCOM student leader. Each group was taken for a tour of the facility which included viewing each lab and discussing the program structure.
LunchAfter completing the tours the students were escorted to the third lecture hall for lunch and a casual conversation with our current students. The students were provided with a variety of entrees provided by the staff and TOUROCOM. The day ended by noon and the students return to the conference downtown.
