LANDER COLLEGE FOR MEN/BEIS MEDRASH L’TALMUD WEEKEND IN LOS ANGELES

Queens, N.Y., March 14, 2008 - Lander College for Men/Beis Medrash L’Talmud, a division of Touro College, will be sponsoring a series of educational events in Los Angeles in early April 2008. Rabbi Dr. Moshe Sokol, dean and professor at LCM, will be leading the presentations with Rabbi Eliyahu Soloveichik, Rosh Yeshiva at LCM.

The programs will begin on Thursday evening, April 3, with a community pre-Pesach father and son Mishmar at YULA Boy’s School. Over the course of Shabbat, Rabbi Soloveichik will serve as guest scholar at the Young Israel of Century City, where he will deliver the Dvar Torah at the 9:30 a.m. minyan and the Shabbat afternoon shiur at 5:45 p.m.

Rabbi Dr. Sokol will be the guest scholar at Congregation Beth Jacob in Beverly Hills, where he will deliver the Dvar Torah at the Beis Medrash morning minyan as well as a lecture following kiddush. Rabbi Dr. Sokol will also deliver a Dvar Torah at Seudah Shlishit at the Young Israel of Century City.

The weekend will conclude with a reception on Sunday evening, April 6 at 7:00 p.m. at the home of Bernard and Audrey Adler, where participants will have an opportunity to learn more about LCM/Beis Medrash L’Talmud.

Rabbi Dr. Sokol studied for seven years at the Talmudic Yeshiva of Philadelphia and was ordained at Israel Torah Research Institute (ITRI) in Jerusalem, which was followed by two years of post-semicha study at Yeshiva Torah Vodaath. Rabbi Dr. Sokol received his doctorate in philosophy from the University of Pennsylvania, where he was a Thyssen Foundation research fellow. He has published extensively in the fields of Jewish philosophy and ethics and has served for 18 years as spiritual leader of the Yavneh Minyan in Flatbush.

Rabbi Soloveichik serves as Rosh Yeshiva at Lander College for Men. He was a student of his father, the late Rabbi Ahron Soloveichik. Prior to joining Beis Medrash L'Talmud, Rabbi Soloveichik was the Segan Rosh HaYeshiva at Yeshivas Brisk in Chicago, where he directed the semicha program and served as posek for the extended yeshiva community.

LCM/Beis Medrash L’Talmud, established in 2000 in Kew Gardens Hills, Queens, has quickly emerged as a destination of choice for outstanding young men committed to the simultaneous pursuit of vigorous Judaic and secular studies.
