Senator Dodd Receives Bruce K. Gould Book Award,
Touro Dedicates Gould Law Library

New York, N.Y., April 3, 2008 Central Islip, N.Y. – Touro College Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center presented the Bruce K. Gould Book Award to United States Senator Christopher Dodd (D-Conn.) and celebrated the dedication of its Gould Law Library on March 31. The celebration included the opening of a new exhibit in the library called, "The Art of Early Printed Books: Judaica Gems and English Bibles from the Collection of Rabbi Howard R. Buechler."

"The Gould Law Library is the jewel of our law school," said Dean Lawrence Raful at the dedication ceremony. "We are truly grateful for the Gould family, who have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to legal training and the written word."

The Bruce K. Gould Book Award, named for its benefactor Bruce K. Gould, is presented annually by Touro Law Center to the author of an outstanding publication related to the law, legal profession or legal system. It has become known as one of the most prestigious awards of its kind. Since 1993, it has been presented to many notable recipients, including Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, The Honorable Marvin E. Frankel, Alan M. Dershowitz, and many others. This year, Senator Christopher Dodd received the award for his book, "Letters from Nuremberg, My Father's Narrative of a Quest for Justice."

Following the presentation of the book award, the Gould family, Touro Law officials and other dignitaries cut the ribbon at the doors of the Gould Law Library to celebrate the library's dedication.

As part of the celebration, the Gould Law Library opened an exhibit, "The Art of Early Printed Books: Judaica Gems and English Bibles from the Collection of Rabbi Howard R. Buechler." The exhibit features 22 early printed books from the collection of Rabbi Howard R. Buechler. The Judaica selections were published between 1546 and 1832 in the major centers for early Hebrew printing. Included among these rarities are a Hebrew lexicon/grammar published in 1546, Mahzorim, books of sermons, a first book of songs for Shabbat, and three copies of the Shulhan ‘Arukh - the Code of Jewish Law. Rabbi Buechler, of the Dix Hills Jewish Center, gave an opening address and discussed the exhibit in the Gould Law Library.

The Gould family, including mother and father Jean and Norman, and sons Bruce, Jeffrey and Robert, all are long and valued supporters of the Law Center. Bruce K. Gould, a member of Touro's Class of 1984, served as President of the Student Bar Association, was a founding member and the second president of the Law Center's Alumni Association and continues to serve as an active member of the school's Board of Governors. He established the school's first endowed faculty chair, The Bruce K. Gould Distinguished Professor of Law, and created the Bruce K. Gould Book Award, a nationally recognized honor bestowed annually by the Law Center on the author of an outstanding publication in the legal field.

Jean and Norman Gould started Gould Publications in the 1950s. Under their stewardship the small, family-owned company grew over the years into one of the nation's leading law book publishers. The Law Center celebrates the Gould family's proud tradition of support for philanthropic, religious, secular and educational endeavors, of which the Gould Family Law Library serves as a fitting memorial and permanent legacy.
