Michael Harter Named Senior Provost and CEO for Touro Western Division

Harter to Lead California and Nevada Campuses; Appointment Will Enhance Regional Alliance for Health Sciences and Education

Henderson, Nevada, March 12, 2008 - Touro President and Founder Dr. Bernard Lander today announced that Michael Harter has been named senior provost and chief executive officer for the university system’s Western Division, and will lead both the California and Nevada campuses. This strategic reorganization will further unify the university’s two major western operations, which focus on health sciences and education programs. Harter, who is currently CEO and vice president for administration for Touro University Nevada, assumes the new post immediately.

“It’s been exciting to shepherd Touro Nevada over the past four years into a thriving campus, including the state’s largest medical school,” said Dr. Harter. “This reorganization will enable the California and Nevada campuses to work much more closely together, at a significantly higher level. I’m so pleased to have the opportunity to forge a strong alliance and help establish Touro’s Western Division as a national force in health sciences and education.”

Michael Harter, PhD, is one of the founders of Touro University Nevada, serving as the inaugural dean of students and vice president for administration, and later CEO. He was previously vice dean of the University of Nevada School of Medicine, where he served as president of the Practice Corporation and directed five departments responsible for undergraduate and graduate medical education programs. He has nearly three decades of experience in higher education, including 14 years as a dean and professor.

“Dr. Harter has brought tremendous vision to the development of Touro University Nevada, creating a world-class operation in a very short time,” said Dr. Lander. “He is uniquely accomplished as an academic and administrator of health science programs, and also brings hands-on experience developing and operating services for children and families – all qualities that make him an exceptional leader. I believe his leadership will enrich and strengthen the relationship between the California and Nevada campuses, while enhancing Touro’s service to the western United States.”

Both the California and Nevada campuses focus on programs in the health sciences and education, with Nevada offering osteopathic medicine, physician assistant studies, nursing, occupational therapy and advanced teacher education. Touro California offers programs in osteopathic medicine, pharmacy, physician assistant studies, public health and education.

Established in 1997, Touro California is located in Vallejo, as the anchor tenant of the Mare Island complex previously occupied by the U. S. Navy. Touro Nevada opened its Henderson campus in 2004, and graduates its first class of doctors of osteopathic medicine in May. Both campuses are part of the Touro system, the fastest-growing independent, Jewish-sponsored institution in the United States. A private, non-profit institution, Touro College currently has approximately 17,500 students studying at 27 locations in New York, California, Nevada and Florida, as well as international programs in Israel, Russia and Germany.
