April 21, 2006: On Tuesday, April 4, 2006, Touro College’s New York School of Career and Applied Studies (NYSCAS) hosted a faculty development day. The theme of the program was “Creativity, Charisma, and Content,” and faculty from all divisions of Touro College were invited to participate. Morning sessions were held at the Lander College for Arts & Sciences’ Flatbush campus location at 1602 Avenue J, and the evening sessions were held at the NYSCAS location at 532 Neptune Avenue.

The faculty development program was hosted and chaired by Mira Felder, Associate Dean of ESL, English and Communications. The advisory committee for the faculty development program was comprised of Stanley Boylan, Ph.D., Vice President of Undergraduate Education and Dean of Faculties, Eva Spinelli, Executive Administrative Dean of NYSCAS and Vice President of Community Education, Deans Leon Perkal, Ella Tsirulnik and Avery Horowitz, and Professors Katherine Barksdale, Carmen Becker, Carol Beckford, Sergey Boyko, Avi Brezak, Gerald David, Kenneth Dreifus, Rosalind Frank, Issac Herskowitz, Warren Kunz, Jacob Lieberman, Judah Weller and Hal Wicke.

Following greetings and remarks by Dean Boylan and Robert Goldschmidt, Vice President of Planning and Assessment and Dean of Students, a number of workshops were available for faculty to choose from, including Inquiry-Based Learning and the Traditional Classroom: Touro’s NSF Grant; How to Ask the Why? Using Effective Questioning Techniques in Order to Elicit Critical Thinking; How to Keep Students Awake in the Classroom: Using Creativity to Motivate Student Interest and Involvement; The Enriched Curriculum: Challenging our Best Students; Differentiated Instruction in the Classroom: When Learning and Teaching Styles Clash; and Creativity on the Blackboard: Case Studies Across the Curriculum.

The plenary session at the morning program was delivered by Marian Stoltz-Loike, Ph.D., Dean of Touro College for Women, who addressed “What is Industry Looking for in Hires?”
