LCM Enrolls Largest Freshman Class in Its History

A record 60 new students enrolled at the Lander College for Men this fall, representing a 20 percent increase over last year’s freshman class and bringing total campus enrollment to close to 250 students. Students have come from across the country and from some of Israel’s best yeshivot. Almost 15 percent of incoming class, superb students, transferred from other institutions of higher learning. On-campus dormitory space is over-subscribed, and the College must now rent apartments in an adjacent complex to house the expanded student body. The Beit Midrash study hall, where all students prepare for their Talmud lectures throughout the morning hours, is so full that new tables and chairs have been added to accommodate the influx.

A number of new full time faculty members have been appointed as well. Rabbi Moshe Stav, a senior rosh ha-yeshiva at Yeshivat Kerem B’Yavneh, one of Israel premier’s yeshivot, has joined the faculty this year as Visiting Rosh Yeshiva. Four distinguished new full-time faculty appointed by the Graduate School of Business are also teaching numerous courses at Lander: Dr. Lawrence Bellman (management), Dr. Deborah Cohen (marketing), Dr. Gary Kleinman (accounting) and Dr. Peter Sperling (economics and finance). In the field of political science, a highly accomplished new full time assistant professor, Thomas Rozinski, based primarily in Flatbush, is teaching at Lander as well. Herb Ratner has also joined the staff as assistant dean, a new position, with special responsibility for overseeing the evening program on campus, as well as for advisement and course scheduling.

The College’s very active athletic department has added roller hockey to its popular offerings in basketball, football and physical conditioning. Lander College for Men may be the only institution of higher education in the United States to offer basketball from 10:30 p.m. until midnight. This is because the College’s six-day-per-week schedule includes a Jewish Studies course for all students lasting until 10:00 p.m., leaving 10:30 p.m. to midnight as the only available slot for basketball!
