Cross-Cultural Live Internet Exchange Organized by New York School of Career and Applied Studies (NYSCAS)
A cross-cultural exchange focusing on the theme “harmony with humankind” took place with live audio presentations over the Internet on October 5. Professor Richard Green, who teaches basic speech/English as a second foreign language at Touro’s New York School of Career and Applied Studies (NYSCAS), organized the presentation. The live Internet exchange began with opening remarks by Professor Green followed by comments delivered by top students in his class who hail from Mexico, Puerto Rico and Haiti. Traditional Portuguese music, “Fado,” was sung live from Portugal and poetry of Portuguese and other Spanish authors was read. “The principal aim [was] to cultivate listening skills across cultural boundaries,” explained Professor Green. “When the whole world is listening in on what you have to say and write, you'd better believe that communication skills will indeed be improved in speaking, writing and in listening.” Professor Green set up a Web site for anyone interested to join in and follow along: http://www.profgreen.tv/PoemarVivo.html.
