Touro Law Center Readies for Move to New Location, New Curriculum

Starting in January, Touro Law Center will undergo a transformation with its move to a new campus in Central Islip, New York, where it will be adjacent to and work with state and federal courthouses. The modern, 180,000 square foot law campus will be one of the first of its kind in the nation. With the move, the law school hopes to become a model for other schools, merging the teaching of law with its practice.

Touro is a law school on the rise - with new energy, a cutting-edge academic plan and, with the move, a setting that will offer students a competitive advantage and an unparalleled law school experience.

Touro has created a Court Observation Program for its new, innovative curriculum that will mesh the courtroom and the classroom. The program will coordinate regular class field studies in the state and federal courts adjacent to the new campus with subsequent campus visits from the judges and lawyers whose cases the students have witnessed first-hand. This will give students unique behind-the-scenes views of how cases are prepared and decided.

Touro’s new building will provide rent-free facilities for approximately a dozen not-for-profit advocacy groups in the surrounding area, giving them a central Long Island location and access to Touro’s law students. This creative partnership will help the advocacy groups obtain legal assistance while also providing students with invaluable experience working with real clients on real cases.

The new campus will also be completely wireless and interactive. U-shaped classrooms will foster debate, complemented by smart-technology podiums, closed-circuit video-conferencing and digital overhead displays. While Touro is well-known for its accessible and accomplished faculty, the design of the new building allows for even more student-teacher camaraderie.

The campus also will have two trial classrooms, a moot courtroom, an auditorium that seats 500, and meeting areas to encourage interaction among students and area judges and lawyers.

A four-story-high and 42,000 square foot library will serve as a wonderful resource not only for students but also the Long Island legal community. Convenient residency options and easy access to New York City complement Touro’s growth as an institution of national acclaim.

Touro Law Center, known for its expert faculty and high-quality programs, was established in 1980 as part of Touro College, and is accredited by the American Bar Association and is a member of the Association of American Law Schools. The Law Center’s ongoing $35 million strategic plan helps provide a learning experience like no other for students, and the new setting will serve as an integral part of the New York legal community.

With a student body of over 750, Touro Law Center welcomes excellent students every year. Selectivity and test scores for the 26-year-old institution have significantly improved in recent years, surpassing national and regional trends for law schools.
