School Awards 345 degrees to Class of 2007 on Tuesday, September 18, 2007 at The Tillis Center for the Performing Arts.
LONG ISLAND, N.Y., - Daniel P. Walsh, president and chief executive officer of Winthrop University Hospital, delivered the keynote address at the School of Health Sciences Commencement on Tuesday, September 18th. The ceremonies, attended by over 300 graduates and their families and friends, took place at the Tillis Center for the Performing Arts on the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in Brookville, New York.
The School of Health Sciences presented 345 candidates for graduation, including doctoral, master's, bachelor's, and associate degrees. Established in 1986, the School currently offers multiple educational programs at four locations. Its degree programs include physician assistant studies, occupational therapy, speech-language pathology and audiology, health care administration, acupuncture and oriental medicine, public health, nursing, and physical therapy.
In his address, Mr. Walsh emphasized the swift growth of healthcare technology during the past thirty years and told the audience, “As healthcare continues to evolve, you, too, as healthcare professionals, will evolve. Never stop learning and never stop growing.” In his closing remarks, Mr. Walsh advised the students: “Manage the challenge wisely and may your challenge lead you to personal and professional growth.”
Touro College School of Health Sciences extension center for the Physician Assistant Program is housed at Winthrop University Hospital in Mineola, N.Y., where Mr. Walsh has been president and chief executive officer of the 591-bed facility on the South Shore of Long Island since January 1999. Prior to joining Winthrop, Mr. Walsh was president & CEO of Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip, Long Island for over 16 years. Mr. Walsh began his career in health care on Long Island as director of health care facility planning and review at the Comprehensive Health Planning Agency in 1974. This agency evolved into the Nassau-Suffolk Health Systems Agency, where Mr. Walsh was named deputy executive director. In 1978, he was named chief executive officer of the Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council, a trade association representing the 23 not-for-profit hospitals on Long Island.
Dr. Joseph Weisberg, dean of the School of Health Sciences, said: “We are very honored that Mr. Walsh took time out from his busy schedule to join us today.” He told the graduates: “As you are about to enter your chosen profession, make sure to prioritize your care. When you have interviewed a new patient and obtained their medical history, pause and think about the big picture. Take your time.” In closing, Dean Weisberg encouraged the graduates to “always be kind and careful practitioners.”
Mr. Walsh holds master’s degrees in healthcare administration from the University of Minnesota and business administration from Michigan State University, and a bachelor of arts in economics from Rutgers University.
Among his many leadership positions, Mr. Walsh has served as chairman of the New York State Catholic Health Conference and the Nassau-Suffolk Health Systems Agency. He serves or has served on the boards of directors of various local, state and regional health care associations including the Nassau Suffolk Hospital Council, the Healthcare Association of New York State and the Greater New York Hospital Association. He is a Fellow of the American College of Health Care Executives (ACHE), and the recipient of the Senior Executives Award presented by the local chapter of ACHE. Mr. Walsh has been recognized for his community service by Circulo de la Hispanidad, Inc., The Coalition for Community Well Being, Inc., Hispanic Counseling Service Center, Inc., the American Heart Association, and received the prestigious David Award presented by Networking Magazine in 2007. Mr. Walsh has personally worked on behalf of the Fireman’s Museum in Uniondale, the Ursuline Sisters of Tildonk in Blue Point and The Society of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, which recently honored him as the 2007 “Friendly Son” for his work in health care on Long Island.
The 345 candidates who received degrees Tuesday were as follows:
- Thirteen candidates for the degree of Master of Public Health
- One candidate for the degree of Master of Science in Forensic Examination
- Thirty-nine candidates from the Occupational Therapy Program for the dual degrees of Bachelor of Science in the Health Sciences and Master of Science in Occupational Therapy
- Sixteen candidates for the degree of Associate in Applied Science in Occupational Therapy Assistant
- Twenty-seven candidates for the Post-Professional doctorate in Physical Therapy
- Thirty-one candidates from the Physical Therapy Program for the dual degrees of Bachelor of Science in the Health Sciences and Doctorate in Physical Therapy
- Seventeen candidates for the degree of Associate in Applied Science in Physical Therapist Assistant
- Forty-six candidates for the degree of Master of Science in the Speech and Language Pathology Program
- One hundred sixteen candidates for the degree of Bachelor of Science in the Physician Assistant Program
- Sixteen candidates for the dual degrees of Bachelor of Professional Studies in Health Sciences and Master of Science in Oriental Medicine
- Fourteen candidates for the degree of Associate in Applied Science in Nursing
- Nine candidates for the degree of Master of Science in Rehabilitation Neuropsychology
