New York, N.Y. – he Department of Athletics of Touro College is pleased to announce the establishment of an endowed Athletic Scholarship Fund to benefit students attending any one of Touro’s three Lander Colleges – Lander College for Men in Queens, Lander College for Women/The Anna Ruth and Mark Hasten School in Manhattan, or the Lander College of Arts & Sciences - Flatbush.
The Fund was initiated in March 2007 through a generous donation from an alumnus of both Touro College and the Lander Colleges. Since the initial donation, other alumni have joined the effort to build the fund to support athletic scholarships by making additional contributions
“The Athletic Scholarship Fund is a unique opportunity that will benefit students enrolled in one or more of the athletic programs at their respective college,” said Professor Irv Bader, director of Touro’s Athletics Department. The Fund will provide up to $3,500 per semester towards the tuition of a fully- matriculated student who fulfills certain criteria. Already two students have been awarded scholarships. The first student, enrolled at the Flatbush campus, is an outstanding member of the swim team and took swimming as an undergraduate course. She also was an exceptional volunteer for Ohel Children’s Home and Family Services in Brooklyn, New York. The second student is an outstanding member of the Touro-Flatbush basketball team, who gave Bar Mitzvah lessons to physically and emotionally handicapped children in Far Rockaway.
To qualify, applicants must be full-time students who have maintained grade point averages of 3.5 or higher, and they also must be enrolled and excel in one or more of the athletic courses offered at Touro. Applicants must participate in an interview process and provide letters of recommendation from their respective deans. Finally, applicants must demonstrate that they are engaged in “Gemilas Chessed” - community service projects in their neighborhoods or communities.
