The struggle for survival and the search for identity are the compelling themes woven into a powerful true story “Waltzing With The Enemy: A Mother and Daughter Confront the Aftermath of the Holocaust,” by Helen Mitsios —a professor of languages and literature at the New York School of Career and Applied Studies, a division of Touro College— and her mother, Rasia Kliot.  The book’s release this week on Kindle coincides with Kristallnacht (November 9 and 10), which commemorates the attacks against Jews that occurred throughout Nazi Germany and Austria and is considered one of the defining events leading up to the Holocaust.

New York, N.Y. - Touro College’s Institute on Human Rights and the Holocaust commemorated Holocaust Remembrance Day with a panel discussion on anti-semitism that included some of the world’s most distinguished scholars, activists, and human rights authorities. Participating in the panel, which was held at the United Nations in Geneva, were writer Elie Wiesel, Jon Voight, Alan Dershowitz, Natan Sharansky, Shelby Steele and Father Patrick Desbois, a French Catholic priest who leads a team of interviewers through Ukraine and Belarus in search of Jewish mass graves from World War II. Over 150 people attended the event, which was titled “Anti-semitism in the Here and Now.”

New York, NY – The entire community is invited to the Touro College and University System’s Presidential Lecture, “Recovering Nazi Looted Art: The Last Prisoners of the Shoah,” presented by renowned attorney Mel Urbach, in observance of Holocaust Remembrance Day, Yom HaShoah. The lecture will take place at the Lander College for Men, located at 75-31 150th Street in Flushing, on May 4th beginning at 7:30 PM. Admission is free and refreshments will be served.

New York, NY – The Touro College Graduate School of Jewish Studies invited author and historian Monty Noam Penkower to discuss his new book, “The Swastika’s Darkening Shadow.” While many are familiar with the events that took place during the Holocaust itself, much less is known about the lives and responses of European Jews in the years between Adolph Hitler’s rise to power and the start of World War II.

New York, N.Y. – The Touro College and University System will host “Commemorating Yom HaShoah: A 70-Year Perspective,” in observance of Holocaust Remembrance Day. The event will feature several survivors who will recount their personal experiences during the war, and whose testimony and insight will provide invaluable lessons for meeting the challenges of our time. They include Dr. Mark Hasten, chairman of the Touro College Board of Trustees; Mrs. Ruth Zimbler, a kindertransport survivor; Mr. Baruch Gross, a former prisoner of Auschwitz-Birkenau; and Ms. Orly Gross, who accompanied her grandfather to Auschwitz earlier this year. Dr. Alan Kadish, president and CEO of Touro College, will deliver remarks, as well.

Central Islip, NY – Touro Law is pleased to announce that in honor of Yom Hashoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, Evelyn Pike Rubin will deliver a lecture on Tuesday, April 30 at 12:30 pm. She will discuss the story of survival of more than 18,000 refugees escaping Nazi terror in Japanese-occupied Shanghai during World War II. Following the lecture, the “Sanctuary in Shanghai: Rescue During the Holocaust” exhibit will open at Touro Law. Both the lecture and the exhibit are open to the public at no charge.

To commemorate Yom HaShoah-Holocaust Remembrance Day, Touro College welcomed renowned Holocaust scholar Prof. Daniel Jonah Goldhagen as part of the Presidential Scholars Lecture Series. Prof. Goldhagen’s lecture, entitled “The Holocaust, Anti-Semitism and the Contemporary Jewish Response to Genocide,” took place at the Lander College for Women-The Anna Ruth and Mark Hasten School in Manhattan.
