The women who had come to the makeshift “health camps” to see the student pharmacists from Harlem had ongoing pain in their bones. Some were so thin that their gaunt arms would not hold a blood pressure cuff. One man had collected so many medications that he stuffed them into two shopping bags and brought them to the camp to be sorted, identified and ultimately thrown away.

Take just the last academic year as a snapshot of Steven Elrod\'s commitment to improving people\'s lives: The third-year student at the Touro College of Pharmacy and Harlem resident traveled to the slums of India to counsel residents on how to use medications; spoke to children in Harlem about healthy eating as part of a national campaign; visited high school students in Staten Island to spread the word about the dangers of popping pills; and researched grocery store circulars in the poor neighborhoods of East Harlem, comparing them with those on the wealthier Upper East Side. Atop these extracurricular activities and his course load, Elrod also found time to organize an intramural basketball program for Touro College.

Held at the Alhambra Ballroom in Harlem, the white coat ceremony marks the beginning of the journey for Touro College of Pharmacy students. 103 students were welcomed as “P1” students (first year pharmacy students) and received their white coats. Together they took the Pledge of Professionalism led by Dean Dutta, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, confirming their commitment to becoming professional practitioners of pharmacy. Welcome, Class of 2017!

Last year Touro College of Pharmacy graduated it’s first class and was accredited by ACPE, both prerequisites to be inducted as members of the prestigious pharmacy academic honor society, Rho Chi. This year, Touro College of Pharmacy became the 100th active member of Rho Chi, with the forming of their chapter, Delta Nu. Forty five students were inducted as the newest members of the Delta Nu Chapter.

Touro College of Pharmacy students, faculty, and staff turned out at Riverbank State Park in upper Manhattan recently to help seniors living in city housing with medication and health counseling.  A total of 34 Touro volunteers spent a beautiful fall day at a medical pavilion in the park providing blood pressure, blood glucose, and bone density screenings - along with counseling on medication management - to some 270 seniors.
