In commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the day that marks the commencement of Hitler’s war against the Jews, Touro College marked the occasion with a program highlighting the personal stories of men who survived the Shoah.
“The scene was surreal: a line of black shadows trudging through the snowy darkness,” began Orly Gross, LCW ’15, to a hushed audience as she described her experience visiting Auschwitz with her grandfather, a survivor. “It was eerily reminiscent of an earlier march, 70 years prior,” continued Orly, “but last time they were surrounded by Germans, clubs, barking dogs. This time, each person held a flickering candle.”
Hadassah Buchwald-Pawlak grew up in Poland, unaware of her Jewish roots. But when communism crumbled, Buchwald-Pawlak’s mother told the 11-year-old they would be moving to Israel.
