All it took was a trip to Peru. Last year, Graduate School of Social Work (GSSW) Class of ’13 student Andrew Petersen chaperoned nearly a dozen 15-year-olds to the exotic South American nation. Prior to that journey, his aspirations ranged from hopeful philosopher to future athletic trainer. But in Peru, he spent days and nights talking with teenagers and gaining insight into the challenges of contemporary adolescence.
It takes conviction and a belief in what the law represents to be a public criminal defender in big cities like New York. A passion for justice and fairness was instilled in Touro College Jacob D. Fuschberg Law Center Class of 2013 graduate Ga’Kia E. Gray early on in life. Her father was a professional baseball player in the days before superstar agents and big unions, and his career suffered from subpar representation. Gray still wishes she could have been there to protect her dad’s rights, and has redirected that sense of purpose to individuals ensnared in the justice system or accused of misconduct.
On Sunday, just before the graduation ceremony, Lander College for Men hosted an awards reception to celebrate the occasion. Dr. Mark Hasten, Chairman of the Board at Touro College, gave a warm welcome; Rav Yonason Sacks, Rosh HaYeshiva of Beis Medrash L\'Talmud offered divrei bracha and using a debate in the Talmud about Pesach Sheni, Rabbi Dr. Moshe Sokol, dean of Lander College for Men, explored the three great challenges of leadership and responsibility Lander graduates will be called upon to meet as they leave the halls of Lander and go out into the world. Roles and responsibilities he knows Lander College for Men has prepared them for well.
Touro College students at Lander College for Men, Lander College for Women and Lander College of Arts & Sciences, along with Machon l\'Parnassa, and School for Lifelong Education, celebrated their graduation at Touro\'s 39th commencement exercises at Lincoln Center. Congratulations to the class of 2013. And a very special mazal tov to Dean Robert Goldschmidt on the conferral of a much deserved honorary doctorate.
