Vallejo, CA – Each year, thousands of children become ill from diseases that could have been prevented by basic childhood immunizations. This year, Touro University California (TUC), in partnership with the Vallejo City Unified School District (VCUSD) and Solano Coalition for Better Health (SCBH), is helping to make a difference.
During the week of April 20-27, 2013, community partners will observe National Infant Immunization Week (NIIW), a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention initiative designed to raise awareness about the importance of childhood immunization. Information regarding immunizations will be provided at various events across the community.
On April 25th, 2013 at 9:15 a.m., TUC, VCUSD, and SBCH will host an “Immunization Awareness” event at Vallejo’s Elsa Widenmann Elementary School in observance of NIIW. Sponsored by Supervisors Erin Hannigan and John M. Vasquez, the “Awareness” will highlight the importance of protecting infants from vaccine-preventable diseases.
“National Infant Immunization Week provides a valuable opportunity for our community to tell people how important it is for children to be vaccinated,” said James E. Foy, D.O. FACOP and director of pediatric care at Touro University California. "Childhood vaccinations are one of the best ways for parents to protect their children against vaccine-preventable diseases."
The event, held at 100 Whitney Drive in Vallejo, is expected to involve more than 100 participants who will be provided with information on the relevance of immunization and enrollment outreach. A continental breakfast will also be served. Community members and parents are encouraged to attend.
