Licensed Physical Therapists can earn a Post Professional Doctor of Physical Therapy degree in an innovative new program at Touro College
The Post – Professional Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program is designed for licensed physical therapists who want to update their clinical knowledge and skills and transition to the DPT degree.
The curriculum includes 30 credits of course work, consisting of 18 credit core courses and 12 credits of electives within a clinical specialty. The core courses prepare the student for a leadership role in clinical practice, education, administration, research, and professional service. The elective courses allow the opportunity for the student to develop specialized clinical skills in a clinical area, including orthopedic, neuromuscular, or geriatric physical therapy. All students complete a doctoral research project or case study.
Courses are scheduled and arranged with the working professional in mind. The schedules of many courses are modeled after professional continuing education courses in that they extend over two to four full day periods, Sunday through Friday. This format allows the program to utilize a diverse faculty that includes nationally and internationally known clinicians.
Licensed physical therapists seeking to augment their skills in an area of clinical specialization and prepare themselves for a leadership role in the field will be interested in this program. The following courses, from the Advanced Orthopedic Masters Degree can be credited toward the DPT Degree:
The following courses from the Entry Level Physical Therapy Masters can be credited towards the PDPT degree:
- Proof of current and valid state physical therapy license or temporary license/ eligibility for NY state license
- Official transcripts from all academic institutions.
- Up to 8 transfer graduate credits from an accredited institution may be granted towards the post-professional DPT degree. A score of 80% or a grade of "B-" (2.75) or better is required.
- Two letters of recommendations from physical therapists.
- Faculty and administration interview for all qualified students.
- Professional portfolio is optional for students:
The professional portfolio provides the applicant the opportunity to earn up to 4 credits towards the DPT degree based on professional experience in the areas of clinical practice, professional development, research, education, and/or administrative work experience. Documentation is evaluated on an individual basis. A portfolio assessment fee of $1200 will be charged.
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required for students who speak English as a Second Language and have not graduated from an English speaking college, with a score of at least 550 on the paper based exam or a 250 on the computer based exam.
- New York State requires proof of immunity against measles, mumps and rubella if born after January 1, 1957
ADMISSIONS PROCEDURES
Students apply directly to the Post-Professional DPT Program for admission. Applications are accepted to the program throughout the year with the full program beginning in the fall semester.
Admissions decisions are made by a committee of faculty and administration based on the totality of each applicant's application, including grade-point-average reflected on official transcripts, standardized scores (when applicable), and letters of reference.

CURRICULUM

NEW PROPOSED ELECTIVE TRACK
Proposed Administrative Track
The Doctorate in Physical Therapy at Touro College
This track will provide the student with the theoretical and practical basis to effectively guide the development of new ways to provide the highest quality health care services to the community. Students will learn to develop strategies for effective health care management, decision-making and explore to the practical application of the newest management approaches.
While a classroom environment will be used, much emphasis will be placed on practical exercises in order to evidence the application of theory. A residency program is currently under development.
A broad array of management courses will be offered and will relate to the areas of:
- Planning for success including business planning and strategic planning,
- Organization of PT practices and departments,
- Development of leadership skills and management of change,
- Financial and regulatory aspects of healthcare,
- Marketing products and services,
- Insuring clinical quality through detailed outcome analysis,
- Team building and process analysis skills,
- Human resource management and supervision,
All faculty have training and strong backgrounds in health care management and have extensive experience specifically related to Physical Therapy in both non-profit and for profit environments.
REQUIREMENTS FOR GRADUATION
- Successful completion of all courses required by the Post Professional Doctor of Physical Therapy
- Completion of at least 2000 clinical work hours (one year)
