A
Note About Estimated Annual Expenses
Annual
personal expenses for books, travel, housing, food, uniforms, supplies, and
other items will vary greatly from individual to individual. All students are
required to carry malpractice and health insurance. Travel and room and board
for clinical assignments will also affect student costs; for instance,
on-street metered parking is additional at Winthrop Extension Center. Students
are encouraged to meet with a financial aid counselor early in the application
process to plan for these expenses.
PHYSICIAN
ASSISTANT SCHOLARSHIPS
In
addition to the financial aid opportunities listed in the School of Health
Sciences bulletin, there are avenues of financial aid specific to PA students.
The
American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) through the Physician
Assistant Foundation (PAF) offers $2,000 - $5,000 scholarships on an annual
basis. The scholarship is based on financial need and dedication to the
physician assistant profession. To obtain an application, write to:

AAPA
has a network of constituent organizations representing the interests of
physician assistants. Nearly all these groups offer financial assistance to PA
students. A full list of constituent organizations can be found at www.aapa.org. Some examples
include:
AAPA Veterans Caucus
AAPA Asian Pacific Islander Caucus
Physician Assistants of Latino Heritage
African Heritage Caucus
Association of Physician Assistants in Oncology
Society for Physician Assistants in Pediatrics
National
Health Service Corps Programs offered through the National Health Service
Corps (NHSC), a component of the U.S. Public Health Service’s Bureau of Primary
Health Care, recruits health care professionals for communities that lack
adequate access to primary care services. The highly competitive scholarship
offers payment of tuition and fees, books, supplies, and equipment for up to
four years of education, as well as a monthly stipend. For each year of
support, scholarship recipients must serve one year in a health professional
shortage area (HPSA) on completion of training. Minimum service obligation is
two years. Contact:

The
New York State Society of Physician Assistants (NYSSPA) offers scholarships to
student members on an annual basis. The awards are approximately $500 to
$1,000 depending upon financial need, academic standing, community involvement,
and total number of applications determined by the Scholarship Committee.
The application deadline is July 1st and awards are given during the NYSSPA
annual conference in the Fall. For further information, contact:

Military
Scholarships
The
Bay Shore Campus and Winthrop Extension Center both offer the Military Scholarship.
Military Scholarships are awarded to two students per class who have served
honorably in any branch of the United States Armed Services and have been
admitted to the Physician Assistant Program.
Interested
applicants should submit to the Program Director a written request that
includes a brief biographical sketch and a statement indicating why they
believe they deserve the scholarship. A committee chosen by the Director
evaluates applicants on the basis of both merit and financial need.
The
amount awarded is calculated as the difference between the recipient’s total
aid from other sources (Federal and state grants, etc.) and his/her total
tuition (i.e., not including fees and additional expenses).
