TOURO COLLEGE’S PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT PROGRAMS
Touro College School of Health Sciences offers two different PA programs that are administratively independent of one another, each having a unique focus and curriculum design. The Bay Shore Campus Physician Assistant Program is based at the School of Health Sciences’ campus in Bay Shore, Long Island, and has an extension center at Winthrop University Hospital. The Manhattan Campus Physician Assistant Program is based at Touro College’s midtown Manhattan campus. Effective Fall 2008, the Manhattan Campus PA Program became a 32-month, dual-degree, graduate program culminating in a BS in Health Sciences and MS in Physician Assistant Studies, phasing out the original undergraduate program.

THE NEW GRADUATE PROGRAM
The Manhattan Campus Physician Assistant Program was approved in 2007 by the New York State Department of Education to register a multiple-award physician assistant program. The new graduate-level curriculum leads to a dual Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences and a Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies (BS/MS) and replaces the current Bachelor of Science in Physician Assistant program. The new graduate program enrolled its first class in Fall 2008.
The BS/MS PA Program supports the Touro College institutional mission to provide educational and professional opportunities, to foster access to underserved populations, and to contribute to the building of a better society for all through these educational opportunities. In addition, the BS/MS PA Program supports the institutional mission and goals of promoting academic and scholarly achievement, while fostering the ethical and humanistic values of the Judaic tradition.
The BS/MS PA Program will develop skilled clinicians who value critical inquiry and lifelong learning, and who can meet the demands of an ever-changing health care environment. The Program will foster the development of compassionate practitioners with high ethical standards and the skills to build productive collaborative relationships. By accomplishing these objectives, graduates of the program will provide vital services to the community as integral members of the health care team.
BS/MS PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONThe new Manhattan Campus Physician Assistant Program is a non-traditional, intense 32-month program offered at Touro College’s main campus in midtown Manhattan, leading to a BS in Health Sciences and an MS in Physician Assistant Studies. The curriculum is organized to afford each student an understanding of the medical sciences and their application to clinical practice. The first 16 months are devoted to didactic work in the basic sciences, medicine, behavioral sciences, and research methodologies, and entail evening/weekend scheduling of coursework, i.e. Monday through Thursday from 4pm to 9pm and Sundays from 9am to 5pm. The next 12 months constitute the clinical phase and entail rotations in clinical sites such as hospitals, clinics, and private practices, in a traditional full-time format. The concluding 4 months includes both didactic and clinical coursework. Students are required to complete a master’s research project.

ACCREDITATION AND REGISTRATION
The Manhattan Campus PA Program is accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, Inc. (ARC-PA), registered by the New York State Education Department, and is a member of the Physician Assistant Education Association (PAEA).
