Upcoming presentations and publications by Touro College Physical Therapy Faculty:
- Professor Christopher Kevin Wong, the Director of Physical Therapy Programs, has had two articles accepted for publication by the Journal of Manual and Manipulative Therapy, based on research he conducted with Carrie Schauer (Class of 2000). "Reliability, validity, and efficacy of Strain Counter Strain techniques," and "The effect of Strain Counter Strain on tenderness and strength," are to be published in 2004 and will be the first randomized quasi-experimental studies investigating Strain Counter Strain reported in the literature. He will also be presenting a poster on “Hopping backwards as a measure of quadriceps function” with Emil Euaparadorn and Daniel Pinto (Class of 2002) in February, 2004 at the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) Combined Sections Meeting (CSM). In collaboration with Dr. Petra Szabo, Professor Wong will also be presenting his research on “the effect of a prior anatomy and physiology course on gross anatomy performance” at the Annual APTA Conference and Expo in June, 2004.
- Professor Robert Troiano, Chair of the Physical Therapy Program in Bay Shore, will present his research entitled, “Improvement in Physical Function and Quality of Life following Transition to 3S shuttle Lock Suspension system in Below Knee amputees” in February 2004 at the APTA Combined Sections Meeting (CSM).
- Professor Jill Horbacewicz, Chair of the Physical Therapy Program in Manhattan, in collaboration with Professor Wong, Emil Euaparadorn and Daniel Pinto (Class of 2002) had her research on “backward hopping as a functional test after ACL reconstruction” accepted for presentation at the APTA CSM.
- Dr. Sylvene Blissett, ACCE of the Physical Therapy and Physical Therapist Assistant Programs in Manhattan, published a monograph entitled, “Caribbean Culture” in an APTA Geriatric Section Home Study Course in August 2003. In conjunction with Dr. Maryanne Driscoll and Dr. Margaret Plack, former Associate Director of Physical Therapy Programs, Dr. Blissett will present the following workshops at the Sun Conference on Teaching and Learning, University of Texas, El Paso, in March, 2004: "Thinking about Thinking: A Cycle of Collaboration" and “Collaboration and the Art of Reflection."
- Dr. Petra Szabo, in collaboration with Professor Wong, had her research entitled “the effect of a prior anatomy and physiology course on gross anatomy performance” accepted for presentation at the 2004 Annual APTA Conference and Expo.
- Dr. Maryanne Driscoll, in collaboration with Dr. Margaret Plack will present an educational workshop on "Collaborative Learning and Action Sets: Same or Different?" at the Sun Conference on Teaching and Learning, University of Texas, El Paso, in March, 2004. In addition, she will present her research on reflective journals, studied in collaboration with Dr. Sylvene Blissett and Dr. Plack, at the following workshops: "Thinking about Thinking: A Cycle of Collaboration" and “Collaboration and the Art of Reflection."
- Dr. Garcia has published research abstracts and has presented research findings most recently at the Combined Sections Meeting (February, 2003) and the Annual Conference and Exposition (June 2003), both sponsored by the American Physical Therapy Association. His doctoral dissertation “Comparing Stepping-in-Place and Gait Ability in Adults With and Without Hemiplegia” was recently published in Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
