The
mission of the Master of Science in Teaching English
to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) Program is
to provide professional educators with contemporary
research-based instructional strategies, teaching
methods, and technological skills for use with students
whose native language is not English. In this way,
the students will be given the opportunity to achieve
the performance standards of the Pre-kindergarten
through Grade 12 curricula of both public and private
schools.
The
Master of Science in Teaching English to Speakers
of Other Languages (TESOL) Program is 36-credit program
of required courses including two supervised student
teaching experiences. All courses emphasize society,
culture, and diversity. The program focuses on theory
and practice of second language acquisition, methods
and materials of teaching English as a second language,
cultural issues, curriculum development, and assessment
of general education and special education students
whose native language is not English.
Touro
College has a rolling admission policy. Scheduled
classes are conducted on weekday evenings and Sundays
throughout the 12-month calendar year at various convenient
metropolitan area locations, and online. Some courses,
however, must be taken at the Main Campus. During
the summer sessions in July and August, some courses
meet for an intensive six-weekday session. Faculty
works closely with students both in class and in the
field-based student teaching placement sites.
Every
semester, the director of the Master of Science in
Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)
Program assists students in designing an individual
course of study based on each student’s educational
background, current work assignment, and future career
goals. By completing all program requirements, students
are eligible for New York State certification as a
TESOL teacher, Pre-kindergarten – Grade 12.
Students
who have taken graduate courses at other accredited
institutions may transfer up to 12 semester hours
with the signed permission of their major professor
and the Dean.
Our
faculty consists of well-experienced educators who
join scholarship with effective everyday practical
techniques. Our students are well-prepared in applying
their knowledge and skills within educational settings.
