TOUROCOM
The Research Plan of TOUROCOM
Mission
  • To advance medical knowledge through research and academic contributions in the fields of basic medical sciences, clinical medicine, and of osteopathic principles and practice.
  • To research and investigate health problems that will lead to a better understanding and application of the philosophy of Osteopathic Principles and Practice (OPP) and Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM).
  • To develop research programs that will focus on the mechanisms of action and efficacy of OMM, accessibility and cost effectiveness of osteopathic medicine, osteopathic physician physician/patient interaction, and the best methods of teaching of OMM.
  • To develop the research capacity of osteopathic professionals by training in both basic and clinical research thus preparing them for the practice of osteopathic medicine and conducting research as independent medical investigators, especially in a field of translational medicine.
Goals
  • The establishment of a central, core curriculum and practical experience in both the community health care facility and research laboratory.
  • The establishment of a curriculum of basic research training programs for students focused on the basics of the clinical and basic research, laboratory research and on evidence-based practice and outcome research.
  • The establishment of basic medical science research laboratories for faculty and students.
  • The establishment of mentored training research programs for students.
  • The establishment of active research program involving both teaching faculty and well-established career researchers.
Planned Primary Areas of Research

The primary areas of clinical research which will commence upon the completion of the research facilities at TOUROCOM are:

  • Research on process of care and evidence-based research on practice and outcome.
  • Research on chronic disease and syndrome management, with and without co-morbidities
  • Community based research programs focused on prevalent health problems like stroke, acute and chronic neuromuscular problems, diabetes, obesity, hypertension and asthma. Other programs will be focused on racial, gender and socioeconomic disparities in health care health outcome and utilization, health education, health maintenance, disease prevention and the barriers of access to health care.

The primary areas of basic laboratory research are:

  • Neural conduction, neuropathies, chronic pain
  • Neuroprotection and neuroregeneration
  • Infections and immune mediated disorders
  • Regeneration, healing and stem cell therapy
  • Vascular diseases and revascularization
  • Neoplastic disorders and gene therapy
