Writing the Research Paper: Structure and Strategies - A Workshop for Graduate Division Students consists of two sessions of approximately one hour each. Topics related to academic writing will be presented. These include:

  • developing a thesis statement
  • creating an outline
  • building an argument

Strategies for how to begin a research paper will be supplemented by a discussion on composing the introduction, body paragraphs and conclusion. The differences between formal and informal language as well as distinctions between wordiness and conciseness will also be emphasized.

An effective research paper reflects critical thinking in organizing a topic of manageable scope. This workshop empowers students to develop a well-reasoned argument – a logical progression of ideas – as they assess information and create a coherent structure for the research paper. The significant roles of selecting and evaluating research information and writing logically are emphasized throughout the workshop.

Students are provided with many proven writing techniques they can use in course assignments. Both workshops have been designed to empower students by building confidence in their writing skills.
