New York, N.Y. – The Touro College and University System conferred an honorary doctorate to Alan Schoor, Touro’s outgoing senior vice president for operations, at the 41st annual commencement exercises of the Lander Colleges at Avery Fisher Hall in Lincoln Center. Schoor will be joining the Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty (MET Council) as executive director and CEO.

“Alan has contributed so much to the growth of our institution and has been an integral part of our leadership team,” said Dr. Alan Kadish, president and CEO of Touro College.

During his eight years at Touro, Schoor was responsible for real estate and construction, physical and information security, information technology, purchasing and emergency preparedness. Schoor ensured proper function of the administrative services required by the faculty to enable them to offer world-class educational opportunities to students; provided a safe and secure environment, resulting in Touro’s ranking as one of the safest schools in the nation; and promoted a culture of wellness, improving the quality of life for faculty and staff.

Among his proudest accomplishments, Schoor listed the opening of a new student dorm near the Manhattan campus of the Lander College for Women-The Anna Ruth and Mark Hasten School; the establishment of an academic center in Brooklyn for Touro’s School of Health Sciences; the creation of a health-wellness program for employees; and the relocation of the Touro headquarters to the Times Square area.

Schoor said that the vision of Touro founder and first president, Dr. Bernard Lander, ZT”L, will guide him in his new role at Met Council.

“Dr. Lander’s vision of creating an educational environment to serve each individual constituent is probably the most important lesson that I learned at Touro,” he said. “Each community is unique and programs have to be tailored to each community’s needs, and even though some might be similar, there are significant differences. To be successful you have to create programs that recognize those differences.

“That’s what Dr. Lander did and that’s why Touro is so successful.”

He added that he was also fortunate to work with Dr. Kadish.

“Dr. Kadish was able to build upon what Dr. Lander built and elevate Touro to new heights. It was my privilege to serve under his leadership.”

Prior to joining Touro College, Schoor served as the deputy executive director and chief business and administrative officer for the Jewish Board of Family and Children Services, a $150 million nonprofit provider of mental and behavioral health Services. He was also the deputy commissioner of General Services for the City of New York during the Ed Koch Administration and the general manager for Honeywell Controls New York City branch. He has a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from the City College of New York and an MBA in finance from Baruch College. He has six children and lives in Monsey, New York with his wife Ryfka.
