Dr. Donne Kampel, associate dean of faculties and founder of the Women’s Leadership Council at Touro College and University System, was a guest speaker and honored national associate at The Grand Business Salon (GBS), held recently at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston.

Sponsored by WomenInBusiness.Org, the meeting provided a valuable opportunity for women who are leaders, innovators, and entrepreneurs to network and exchange ideas. More than 120 women − ranging in age from 25 to 80 years old and representing diverse ethnicities, incomes, and career goals − attended the salon

Dr. Kampel, a well-known advocate for the advancement of women in academia and other fields, is the author of “Learning Leadership: Women Presidents of Colleges and Universities,” published by Lambert Academic Publishing. Other guest speakers included experts in finance, private enterprise, and web-based non-profit organizations.

“I was very impressed with the caliber of people speaking at the event,” said Dr. Kampel. “They invited women who inspire and mentor other women, or perhaps had taken a different path from the one they began. Everyone was different, but all had done something that was remarkable,” she added.

One participant launched an online jewelry business to benefit a charity; a former vice president of Goldman Sachs started a non-profit school foundation in Tanzania; another vice president of Eastern Bank runs the institution’s charitable foundation. “Many of the participants who attended the salon are business women who want to do good at the same time,” Dr. Kampel said.

Dr. Kampel runs the Women’s Leadership Council at Touro College, which encourages the mentoring of students, faculty, and administrators who support each other’s efforts to attain intellectual, educational, and professional goals. The Council has offered workshops on topics such as “Money Matters: A Financial Literacy Seminar for Women;” “Dress the Part: Image Management for Successful Women,” and “Women and Harassment: How Hostility and Abuse Can Impact All Sectors of Life.” Most recently, Dr. Kampel was appointed to the advisory council of Education Update, an award-winning publication focusing on issues, people, and events in academia.

Toby Nadler, president and founder of WomenInBusiness.Org, praised Dr. Kampel’s initiatives at Touro College and elsewhere. “Her influential leadership and outstanding efforts on behalf of the students, faculty and administration at Touro College has gone beyond the traditional definition of success, to include those she has helped and what she has changed,” Nadler said, adding, that Dr. Kampel “enthusiastically supports and encourages women’s success with her expertise, books and dynamic speaking engagements outside the higher learning environment.”

Before coming to Touro, Dr. Kampel worked at Yeshiva College in New York City as assistant dean and at City University of New York, developing funding for several important university programs.

At Touro, Dr. Kampel continues to run workshops for women in leadership that teach, “how to build skills, identify goals, and push forward.” When asked to reveal her secret to personal success, Dr. Kampel said, “Success is in the journey, and who we bring along.”

The next “Women in Business Grand Business Salon” will take place on June 4 at the Javits Center in New York City. For more information, visit womeninbusiness.org.
