Module 1
OBJECTIVE: Calculating the Mean, Median and Mode by using a simple experiment.
Introduction
MEAN
The mean of a collection of numbers is their arithmetic average, computed by adding them up and dividing by their number.
MEDIAN
The median is the midpoint in a collection of numbers; half the data values are above the median, and half are below.
MODE
The mode is the most frequently occurring value in a collection of numbers.
Let's calculate mean, median and mode in the following experiment.
There are 9 students in Mrs. Green’s class.
Mrs. Green wants to know the average or mean time it takes them to divide a deck of 52 cards into 2 equal piles each containing 26 cards, regardless of color or suit. Let us calculate this with her. She will use a stopwatch to time the students.
Answer the following questions in the boxes provided. After you complete each answer, click the "Check Answer" button for feedback.
1. What would be the average or mean time it took the students to deal a deck of 52 cards into two piles?
2. What would be the median?
3. What would be the mode?
